The beach is the only place to be on a lovely hot sunny day and Scarborough's beautiful stretch of golden sand takes some beating.
Three main areas here with the lovely flat stretch on the North Side, the extremely popular stretch down on the front opposite the amusements and also the area below the spa with beach conditions changing with every season. Here is where the children can keep themselves amused for hours exploring the many rock pools, having a paddle and playing in the sand.
If you are having a day down on the south bay beach The Kabin, situated next to the cliff lift is well stocked with everything you could possibly need. A brilliant selection of inflatables at reasonable prices are available and the extremely helpful and friendly couple who run the shop are only too happy to both inflate and deflate them for you at no extra charge.
Also stocked are some really great sun hats for all the family, beach balls, towels, beach shoes, sunglasses, beach toys, buckets and spades, ice creams, crisps, cold drinks and lots more. You can even hire a deckchair!
Spa Shops, Jenkinsons, situated in the parade of shops just below the Spa will supply you with not only your daily paper but a myriad of affordable gifts and souveniers.
Great selection of leather bags at really reasonable prices, hats, sunglasses, sweets, cigarettes, drinks, ice-creams, magazines, postcards, childrens toys, beach items, jewellery, shells, the list is endless. Great bunch of staff as well!
The Spa Bar down at the Spa now boasts big screen viewing so no need to miss out on any big sporting event.
Plenty of seating inside but if you prefer you can sit outside and watch the world go by or just gaze out to sea.
Good selection of beers, lagers, wines and spirits plus soft drinks and teas and coffees. Crisps, sandwiches and sweets are also available.
The newly refurbished Spa Tea Room (formerly The Green Room) is very, very popular with plenty of seating both indoors and out. Even on a windy day, provided the sun is shining you can sit outside in the sun court and make believe you are in some far away destination!
Wide selection of both hot and cold food, sandwiches, cakes, teas, coffees and soft drinks, plus good value daily specials which includes a five item breakfast, served until about 11.00am, for less than four pounds. Fast and friendly service.
Another extremely popular place to visit is the well situated Clock Cafe just above the line of chalets on the South Bay. Built in Victorian times in the same distinctive style as the surrounding chalets, it makes a lovely focal point resting on the side of the cliff, and what a view! It is simply stunning and for the fortunate visitors offers plenty of outside seating by which to admire it.
All the delicious cakes, scones and pastries are made on the premises and are really good value. Plenty of other choices with everything from a full English breakfast to fish and chips with a good selection of dishes for the children. All the sandwiches are made to order with a take away service also available.
Good strong pot of tea, various coffees, milk shakes and ice-creams and lots more. Very busy in high season so be prepared to wait.
Is Scarborough the surfing capital of the North?
And don't forget the famous award winning Scarborough Donkeys, they have been there for over 200 years (not the same ones I hasten to add) If you are around 15 minutes before their lunch, you will be able to hear them letting their keeper know it's lunch time.
